On March 20, Ronald Hubbard, 45, was driving his Nissan Altima west on Neighborhood Road in Mastic Beach when a Suffolk County Police officer spotted that he didn’t have a front license plate, Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini said. When the officer turned to initiate a traffic stop, Hubbard allegedly sped away onto Oakwood Drive before turning southbound on Flower Road.
While attempting to evade the officer, Hubbard allegedly sped through a stop sign and struck a Toyota Rav 4, causing it to overturn. All three passengers of the Nissan, Sabine Auguste, of Ridge, Jamel Hubbard, of Wyandanch, and an 18-year-old boy were seriously injured in the crash, Sini said. The boy remains in critical condition.
The passengers in the Toyota, Shirley residents Maryann Valentin, 59, and James Mayo, 56, were also injured.
According to Sini, Hubbard exited the vehicle following the crash and allegedly told officers that he was a bystander who was uninvolved, providing a statement to investigators under the name “David Williams.”
The investigation into the crash eventually led investigators to Hubbard, who was identified as the driver of the Nissan. Hubbard was arrested on March 26 in Pennsylvania on open warrants for his arrest. He was transported back to Suffolk County on April 10.
Hubbard was charged with:
- Four counts of third-degree assault;
- Making an apparently sworn false statement;
- Offering a false instrument for filing;
- Leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death or serious injury;
- Fourth-degree assault;
- Reckless endangerment;
- Criminal impersonation;
- Endangering the welfare of a child;
- False personation;
- Reckless driving, and;
- Two counts of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Hubbard was arraigned and bail was set at $500,000 cash or $1 million bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 29. If convicted on the top charge, Hubbard will face a maximum of seven years in prison.
